On Friday, 7 buses rolled away from TSAS at 8:00 in the morning with nearly our entire staff and student body on their way to an amazing day of community building. Inside the Conference Center, small groups discussed those things that make TSAS different from other schools and upperclassmen gave advice to the underclassmen. Outside, the groups worked as teams on problem solving activities and used GPS devices to orient themselves in the camp.

A special thanks to Brian Bovaird, Terry Hendrix and the entire team at Camp Loughridge for making this such a special event in a very amount of short time. Also, thanks to all of the teachers that were so happy to spend their entire day getting sweaty and working with the amazing students from our school.

We would like to reflect on this event and the communications leading up to it, whether you were a participant of not, we would appreciate it if you took some time to take this short survey to help us with our planning for the future.

The TSAS Parent Teacher Student Association sponsored four wonderful workdays on July 31, August 1st, 7th, and 14th. During these days both upstairs commons, the south hallway downstairs, both upstairs bathrooms, and 5 classrooms were painted. In addition six complete rooms were moved out and back in.

It goes without saying that this amazing work could not have been done without the support of our amazing community. Parents, Teachers, Students, Grandparents, Little Kids, and Alumni all worked together to really change the school for the better.

For example, the north commons went from looking like this

Dr. Shoemaker worked with the school in 2009 as an interim director and will be leading the school in a new capacity this year. As director, Dr. Shoemaker is responsible for the overall supervision of the school particularly in financial matters and strategic planning. Eric Doss was hired as principal in June and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the school.

This change comes as a direct result of the strategic planning process that was undertaken in the 2009-2010 school year. These new roles will allow the school to continue the tradition of excellence that TSAS is known for and to help move the school to even greater success in the future.

Before accepting the role of principal, he worked as the band and orchestra director as well as a computer teacher at TSAS for 8 years. During his tenure, he created the jazz bands and orchestra, which have developed into award winning programs that have received superior ratings at local and state contests. He also worked at Clinton Middle School in Tulsa, and began his career at McMath Middle School in Denton, Texas.

Eric was raised in Tulsa and graduated from Edison High School in 1993. While at Edison, he was selected to participate in a pilot jazz program under the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. After graduation, he left Tulsa to study at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK and was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, and Orchestra. He earned a Bachelor’s of Music Education in 1999 and began teaching immediately. Eric is currently working on a Masters of Education at the University of Oklahoma and expects to graduate in December of 2010.

Eric is a member of the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association, the Oklahoma Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, and is a board member of the Oklahoma Jazz Educators Association. He is married to Rachel Doss (also a teacher at TSAS) and has two daughters, Brady and Harper.

Eric believes that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed and that public education must continually improve to meet the needs of our students.
